Description About The Author:- Chittabrata Palit M.A.(Cal.), Ph. D. (Cantab), FRAS (London), is a former Professor in History, Jadavpur University and is currently UGC Emeritus Fellow. An eminent historian, he specialises in Economic History of India and History of Sciences in India. His books in this field are: (edited), 'science, Technology, Medicine and Environment in India: Historical Perspectives, (1994); 'science and Nationalism' (2002) ed. 'History of Medicine in India' (2006) ; 'scientific Bengal' (2007). He was the Principal Investigator of the UGC Major Project, the primary report of which is incorporated in this volume. Nupur Dasgupta M.A., Ph.D. (J.U.) is a Reader in the Department of History, Jadavpur University. She was the co-investigator of the UGC Project. Her major publication is 'The Dawn of Technology in Indian Protohistory' (1997). She has been Charles Wallace Fellow at SOAS, London University, in 2001 and has also completed post-doctoral research sponsored by the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi.
