These were men of vision who built industries at a time when Indians was just beginning to recognise and fight the british stranglehold over economy. Ghanshyam Das Birla raised a jute industry to rival the British mills. Later, he built not only a huge business empire but also a network of schools, temples, and the prestigious Birla institute of technology. Though he did not live to see them completed, Jamsetji Tata's plans live on as a cotton mills, steel plants, a hydro-electrical power plant , and the Indian institute of Science. When the British did not allow Indians into five- star hotels, he built his own, the Taj, in Mumbai. Jamsetji's nephew , JRD Tata, took over an already large business and expanded it in new directions-trucks, tea and India's first airline.
