Bharat: Gandhi Ke Baad is the first volume in the Hindi translation of India After Gandhi: The History Of the World's Largest Democracy, a critically acclaimed book by Ramachandra Guha. The second volume of the translation is called Bharat: Nehru Ke Baad. The book takes a look at Indian history after the advent of independence from the British as a colony. Despite most of India believing that India's history consists of events that occurred before independence in 1947, the author sets out to prove that there is a lot we have to take note of in history after it. It is an ode to the strength of united India, which has survived despite vicious attacks and threats of division along the lines of caste, violence, creed, and color. Besides the negative aspects, the author also makes it a point to show the reader the various accomplishments of India. The writing of Bharat: Gandhi Ke Baad is scholarly and lucid even after the translation at the able hands of Sushant Jha, and is extensively researched by the author. The book in its English version was picked as the Book of the Year by Outlook and The Economist among others, besides winning the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2011. This version was published by Penguin India in 2012, and is available in paperback.
