Delhi has a well-written and strongly-worded story about the making of the city of Delhi. The story also revolves around the writer's, sexual and mental, relationship with a eunuch. The story through its various chapters explores the historical build up of the great city of Delhi and how through the ages it was exploited, built, destroyed and rebuilt to reach its present state. The book has a strong narrative that gives the story a unique pace and sense of adventure The story starts with the writer returning from England, where he has had many promiscuous experiences in a foreign land. On the hot summer streets of Delhi, he meets a eunuch called Bhagmati and befriends her. He explores her sexually and slowly they both begin to relate to each other mentally. Through the relationship built between both of them, they explore the history of the city. They go all the way back to the Mughals, British Raj, partition of India, assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and the modern-day existence of the city. The book has vivid descriptions of the historical architectural wonders of the city and old lanes and the contrasting modern-day city culture. Delhi humorously weaves the story of the city, while the relationship between the two people grow stronger. The writer, is a bawdy and playful character, who loves the city as much as he does Bhagmati. The open market ed edition of the book has been published by Penguin India in 2010.
