Alberto P. Guimaraes obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, and is a specialist in magnetism. Currently professor of physics at the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF) in Rio de Janeiro, he has been active in popularizing science for many years, for example as founder and one of the directors of the publishing house responsible for the magazine "Ciencia Hoje" and its equivalent for children, "Ciencia Hoje das Criancas" for the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC).
