In the initial part of the book, chemical thermodynamics, kinetics, and conservation equations are reviewed extensively with a view to preparing students to assimilate quickly intricate aspects of combustion covered in later chapters. Subsequently, the book provides extensive treatments of 'pre-mixed laminar flame', and 'gaseous diffusion flame', emphasizing the practical aspects of these flames. Besides, liquid droplet combustion under quiescent and convective environment is covered in the book. Simplified analysis of spray combustion is carried out which can be used as a design tool. An extensive treatment on the solid fuel combustion is also included. Emission combustion systems, and how to control emission from them using the latest techniques, constitute the subject matter of the final chapter.

Appropriate examples are provided throughout to foster better understanding of the concepts discussed. Chapter-end review questions and problems are included to reinforce the learning process of students.

D. P. Mishra, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Dr. Mishra has more than 15 years of teaching and research experience. He has taught several courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in areas of combustion, aircraft propulsion, thermodynamics, and air-breathing missile propulsion. He is actively engaged in a number of sponsored research projects and consulting works in the field of combustion and spray. Currently, he is serving as an Assistant Editor, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Elsevier, USA. Also, he has been nominated as the Editor, Asia-Pacific Conference on Combustion, 2010.

Dr. Mishra has four Indian patents and more than 144 research papers to his credit. He has been a visiting faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tokyo Denki University, Japan. He has established a combustion facility in the aerospace engineering department at IIT Kanpur. He has been conferred the INSA-JSPS Fellowship in 2002. In recognition of his research work, Dr. Mishra has been a recipient of Samanta Chandrasekhar award for his contribution to the science and technology.
