Professor K.B. Powar is Secretary General of the Association of Indian Universities. Earlier he was Vice Chancellor of Shivaji University, Kolhapur and before that Professor of Geology at the University of Poona, Pune. A well known earth scientist, who has been the President of the Geology and Geography Section of the Indian Science Congress and President of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, he is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India.
In recent years Professor Powar has made significant contributions to research and policy planning related to higher education, especially in the areas of quality assurance and economics of education. He is the author of three books including Accreditation in Higher Education - An Indian Perspective, International Students in Indian Universities and Performance Indicators for Distance Higher Education. He has also edited 12 volumes on higher education including University Administration and Management, Higher Education in India - In Search of Quality, State Funding of Higher Education, Higher Education for Human Development, and Internationalisation of Indian Higher Education.
