View More Manoj Kumar Pal is a physicist of international renown. He served as the Director of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata (1983-92) and as a Co-Director of all courses on Nuclear Physics from 1969-84 at the International Centre for Theoretical physics in Trieste, Italy, under the joint auspices of IAEA, UNESCO and the Government of Italy. He retired from active services in 1992 and thereafter held for five years a retired senior scientists project of the CSIR. Government of India. He has held at different times visiting positions with research cum teaching assignments at several institutions abroad-Princeton University, MIT, Universities of Oxford and Manchester, AERE (Harwell, England), KFA (Julich, Germany), Australian National University, Flinder University of South Australia and a few others in USA and Japan. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and of the Academy of Sciences (Bangalore). He has been awarded the Meghnad Sada Medal (Asiatic Society) and the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa by the North Bengal University. He is a member of the Central Advisory Board on Archaeology (Government of India). He has authored an advanced text book on Nuclear Theory (Affiliated East-West Press) and a treatise on Science, Religion and Philosophy entitled Old Wisdom and New Horizon, published as vol. 15, part 5 in the prestigious series entitled project on the History of Indian Science, Philosophy and Culture. Apart from many research articles in reputed physics journals and conference proceedings he has published semi-popular essays on Nuclear Energy, our science education, history of science education and research (written in Bengali) during the 20th century. He has an amateurs interest in ancient history over the last five decades. He has widely travelled in the east and the west and has lived in some of these countries over extended periods. The resultant culture synthesis in his thoughts is very deep and genuine. He has a soft corner for Japan acquired through several extended visits and close contact with Japanese friends.
