A Season Of Ghosts is a collection of one novella and nine short stories that are all set in the foothills of the Himalayas. These stories explore the genre of horror and mystery fiction. This collection of stories by Ruskin Bond features various kinds of horror and a host of vibrant characters and story turns that are meant to cause goosebumps. Every story has a different kind of scare to offer to readers of all ages. On Fairy Hill is grim and melancholic, The Prize offers dark humour laced with horror and well-dressed diners with striking malevolence, The Black Cat features the curious case of the cat of the proper witch, Miss Bellows, The Rakshasas has scary folk tales of traditional hill spirits, Reunion At The Regal has familiar Bond characters, and Wilson's Bridge that revolves around the suicide of Mrs Ray and evens that follow an ancient tragedy. The second half of the book comprises of the novella, titled Who Killed the Rani, which is a gripping murder mystery. The Himalayas are a character unto themselves in all the stories, looming above every storyline and described beautifully by Bond's lyricism. A Season Of Ghosts was published by Penguin India in 2000 in paperback.

Ruskin Bond's first novel, The Room on the Roof, written when he was seventeen, won the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957. Since then he has written several novels (including Vagrants in the Valley, A Flight of Pigeons and Delhi Is Not Far), essays, poems and children's books, many of which have been published by Penguin India. He has also written over 500 short stories and articles that have appeared in a number of magazines and anthologies. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993 and the Padma Shri in 1999.
