Before disappearing over the Pacific Ocean in 1937, famed aviator Amelia Earhart was a national treasure. A noted author, publisher, fashion designer, public speaker, and businesswoman, she traveled in all circles of life, from the Midwest farmlands of her youth to the New York society, which embraced her as one of their own. Her determination and adventurous spirit earned her a place in history, becoming a symbol of freedom and success for women. Amelia, directed by Mira Nair (The Namesake, Vanity Fair, Monsoon Wedding), chronicles Earhart's early aviation triumphs and her meteoric rise to fame and fortune. Two-time Academy Award(R)-winner Hilary Swank stars as the legendary aviatrix, with Academy Award(R)-nominee Richard Gere as Earhart's publisher and husband, George Putnam. Academy Award(R)-nominee Virginia Madsen, and Golden Globe(R)-winner Ewan McGregor round out the excellent cast. Fox Searchlight Pictures will release Amelia in select theaters October 23, 2009.
