Schizophrenia is a term we tend to use casually to refer to anything from unpredictable behaviour to two-facedness. But what precisely is it? A split personality? Mental retardation? A personality disorder? Divine retribution for a misspent youth?
It is none of these, says eminent psychiatrist Dr Vijay Nagaswami, as he proceeds in The Splintered Mind: Understanding Schizophrenia to dispel these and other myths about the mental illness that psychiatrists call schizophrenia. Sadly, many people in India know little about the illness, or even that it is one.
This book, written to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (India), attempts to fill this gap. It explores a variety of facets of schizophrenia and explores its causes, its clinical manifestations, its medical treatment and what are called psychosocial interventions - cognitive and social skills training, family care, vocational rehabilitation, creative therapies and other psychotherapies.
Written with deep understanding in an accessible style and replete with fictionalized case stories, the book, targeted not just at persons who have been exposed to the world of schizophrenia but at all conscientious adult Indians, is meant to educate and illuminate.
