Mykonos has not been specially prominent among the Greek islands of the Aegean for its archaeology or history. Subjected to successive waves of external domination in the Eastern Mediterranean, it was so disregarded by its Venetian rulers at the end of the 14th century that they put it up for sale by auction. The Ottoman Empire and Barbary pirates had their turn in later centuries, and perhaps the tourist invasion of modern times is only the latest to threaten its individuality. But now the island has a warm and loving book on all aspects of its culture, scenery and its people. Allan Konya's letters from Mykonos, which make up the book, have been written over many years of visits. They reveal an increasing knowledge of and affection for life on the island, and have been arranged for publication to reflect both the traditional annual calendar and cultural themes. Religious festivals are described, along with work, food, wine, music, and traditional crafts. The lavish photographs are enriched by fine line drawings which manage to be lively and full of character, as well as being clear and informative about, for example, the windmills for which Mykonos is famous. The structure and layout help to convey the author's enthusiasm for the island, and there are also imaginative touches which make even the contents pages attractive. This book can be an inspiration for anyone who would like to create a permanent and accessible record of their passion for a place and a culture. - Adam Butcher from The Friends of the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford Newsletter, Issue 69 November 2010
