There has been certainly significant change in the woman at the end of the twenty-first century. Women predominate among the lowest earners of society, and amongst the poorest sections of the population. There remains a yawning gap between men and women's pay. While many of the old obstacles have been surmounted, new and equally challenging barriers have arisen. The history of women in policing represents a continum of women's involvement in the police environment, first in their uniquely female role and today in a unisex role with male colleagues. The history also illustrates how initial demands for a limited, specialised role based on gender were replaced by demands for equality by later generations of women with totally different social histories and self-images. Without a study of the legal worlds of women, the work would have been merely descriptive of the status of women and what people, organisations, governments and international agencies believe the reality should be. But reality is found in a just opposition of the dynamics of women's progress and the legal order; in adherence to legal precepts, or in their denial; in legal procedures to compel enforcement; and in the search for new laws to achieve equal opportunities and rights for women, and questions about which laws are most effective. Anyone who is at all concerned about the rights of women will soon realize that to achieve meaningful equality for women requires first of all a thorough knowledge of the legal environment.
